LOS OSOS, Calif. — For Troy Mattheyer there’s no school like the old school as the Ellis, Kan. resident won the Retro division title at the International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts’ (ICORE) Rocky Mountain Revolver Regional this past Sunday in Eaton, Colo.
The event is part of a six match revolver competition series sponsored by Smith & Wesson, the 158-year-old firearms maker whose wheelguns are favored by competition shooters.
Mattheyer claimed the Retro title with a final score of 290.38, winning six of the eight stages in the match. He led the match for all but one stage, the first.
The Retro division in ICORE is named for the “retro” revolvers that hold only six shots and use speed loaders as opposed to new higher capacity revolvers with seven or eight rounds where moon clips are permitted. Moon clips allow for faster reloading.
Coming in second 99.7 points behind Mattheyer was the Senior Retro winner and Rapid City, S.D. resident Douglas Schmidt who posted a final score of 390.08. Third place went to Nathan Eitrheim, also of Rapid City, S.D., who finished 12.04 points behind Schmidt with 402.12.
Colorado shooters Chuck Sampier of Fort Collins and Michael Knutson of Westminster followed closely behind finishing fourth and fifth, shooting 407.97 and 411.76 respectively. Both shooters managed to win a stage in the match with Knutson winning the first stage and Sampier the third.
The ICORE Rocky Mountain Regional Revolver Championship was held at the Weld County Fish & Wildlife High Plains Shooting Range Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2. The competition drew shooters from throughout Colorado, as well as California, Idaho, Kansas, South Dakota and Utah, and was the third in a series of six regional events. The next regional event is scheduled for the Sunday, July 18 when the Central States Revolver Regional will take place in Buchanan, Mich.
