FROSTPROOF, Fla. — Coming from behind on the final stage of the match, Michael Hollar of Conover, N.C. overtook the reigning Open division national champion K.C. Eusebio of Alpharetta, Ga. to claim the Production division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) Area 6 Regional Handgun Championship this past weekend in Frostproof, Fla.
Hollar started the match strong with wins on the first two stages that gave him a lead which held through the fourth stage.Then on the fifth stage, after stage wins on the third and fourth stages, Team H&K’s Eusebio moved out in front and continued to hold the lead through the next six stages as Hollar worked his way back into striking distance.
On the 12th and final stage of the match, and down just 6.7593 points to Eusebio, Hollar posted the fourth best run on the stage and picked up 28 points on Eusebio as the H&K shooter finished the stage in 23rd place and nearly two seconds slower than Hollar.
Hollar ended the match a total of 21.6818 points ahead of the second place Eusebio with a final match-winning score of 949.0337.
“It’s never easy to outgun K.C. in competition, but Michael shot a solid match and put himself within striking distance. With the match on the line, Michael came through with the winning performance needed to take the title,” said Michael Voigt, president of USPSA.
Eusebio finished the match with 927.3519 total points. Third place went to Todd Sindelar of Mechanicsville, Md. who won the eighth stage and posted a final score of 909.9277.
Rounding out the top five were Team Smith & Wesson’s Gordon Carrell of Houston, Texas who finished in fourth for the second year in a row with 907.2990 and a win on the 10th stage, and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s Lee Dimaculangan of Phenix City, Ala. in fifth with 904.7554.
Elsewhere in Production division competition, Team Glock’s Tori Nonaka claimed the Women’s Production title with a commanding performance and a final score of 764.3498. Among the seniors, Bruce Wallace of Jacksonville, Fla. won the Senior title and finished 11th overall with 829.2154 and Stephan Hobson of St. Petersburg, Fla. took the Super Senior title with 493.6198.
The Area 6 Regional Handgun Championship was held at the Universal Shooting Academy range in Frostproof, Fla. The match drew 349 top shooters from around the country as well as Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Jamaica and Venezuela.
