The Walther Model PPK came on the market in 1931 as a compact version of the larger Walther PP. The fame of the PPK model was due in part to the many James Bond movies. The Model PPK stands for Polizei Pistol Kurz and was also known as the Polizei Pistole Kriminal. The PPK was mainly successful in the US, but the import of this model ended in with the American Gun Control Act of 1968. To meet new requirements on minimum height for imported guns, Walther designed a new version called the Walther PPK/S. Later, this requirement was bypassed by issuing a license to an American representative, Interarms.
In 1999, another step was taken to bring the Walther models to the US.. Smith & Wesson of Springfield, Massachusetts and Carl Walther GmbH of Germany announced a joint plan to distribute Walther branded firearms and accessories in the United States. For more information on current models of the PPK, visit www.waltherarms.com.
Hosted by actor and gun enthusiast Joe Mantegna, Gun Stories takes viewers through a firearm’s history, from the heart of the design through its use on the range. Throughout the series, historians, shooters, trainers and industry experts place these weapons in their historical and social context, making Gun Stories a unique and definitive collection on the history of firearms.
