SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — St. Paul, Minn. resident Jon Huspek claimed the Senior title at the 2011 Springfield Armory USPSA Single Stack Nationals this weekend.

Huspek jumped out to an early lead in the 14 stage match, remaining in control until the fourth stage where Scott Warren of Montclair, Va. overtook him.

As Huspek dropped to third, Warren maintained the lead through the fifth stage with Jim Schoonmaker of Tampa, Fla. in second.

On the sixth stage, Huspek began his move back to front by moving into second place as Warren gave up the lead to Schoonmaker. Then on the seventh stage Huspek reclaimed the lead, which he kept through the remaining stages of the match, taking the title with a final score of 721.2450.

“The competition for the Senior title saw a lot of back-and-forth and jockeying for position, but in the end Jon retained his lead and walked out of PASA Park as USPSA’s 2011 Senior Single Stack National Champion,” said Michael Voigt, USPSA president.

As Huspek returned to the lead, Schoonmaker dropped to second with Warren still in third. Schoonmaker then fell further behind to fifth place on stage eight when Warren moved into second, where he finished the match with 721.2450, and John Smith of Marseilles, Ill. moved to third where he too finished the match with 693.8056.

Schoonmaker remained in fifth place behind John France of Oro Valley, Ariz. through the next four stages until stage 13 when the Floridian pulled past France into fourth. Schoonmaker would finish the match in fourth with a final score of 657.8921 while France took fifth with 650.2149.

Also claiming titles at this year’s championship were Dave Sevigny of Smyrna, Ga. who won the overall title with 977.8292 points, and Sara Dunivin of Phoenix, Ariz., who claimed the Women’s title with 683.7541. The Junior title went to Austin Cisna of Metamora, Ill. who finished with 610.3718 while the Super Senior title went to Robert Keller of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. with 577.6446.

The Springfield Armory USPSA Single Stack Nationals were held this past weekend in Barry, Ill. with over 350 top shooters from around the country competing in the event.

The match was established in 1994 as the Single Stack Classic by pistolsmith Richard Heinie, and then USPSA Illinois Section Coordinator, Russell Cluver. The match was designed specifically for the 1911 model pistol and no other pistol design has been permitted in the competition.

In 2006, USPSA designated the popular match as a national championship. The name Single Stack refers specifically to magazine used in the 1911 pistol which holds just a single column of ammunition. The 1911 is one of the most popular firearms sold in America and the Single Stack National Championship is the preeminent showcase for the venerable 1911.
