LOS OSOS, Calif. — Janae Sarabia, a 13-year-old from Lompoc, Calif., won the Junior Open division title at the 2010 Smith & Wesson International Revolver Championships (IRC) this past weekend in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Sarabia, who is one of the newest members of the Smith & Wesson shooting team, won eight of the 12 stages and led all junior shooters through the entire match to take the title in a final time of 417.83.
Sarabia’s time also placed her third in the Lady’s Open competition where she led for most of the match before being overtaken on the final stage by multi-time national shooting champion, and Smith & Wesson shooting team captain, Julie Golob of Glasgow, Mont.
“I was pretty happy with how I shot the match. I’ve been improving all year long and feel a big sense of accomplishment taking third and ecstatic that I finished as the top junior,” said Sarabia.
Finishing second in the Junior Open contest was Nick Gurule of Stanley, New Mexico who won the final stage of the match and finished 10 seconds behind Sarabia in a time of 427.83 seconds.
Rounding out the top five juniors were Zachary Shepard of Lompoc, Calif. winning three stages and claiming third place with 451.18 seconds, Team Smith & Wesson member Rachel Crow of Antioch, Calif. in fourth with 500.19 and Rian Edington of Renton, Wash. in fifth with 590.10.
Organized by the International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts (ICORE), and held at Hogue Action Pistol Range at the San Luis Obispo Sportsmen’s Association, the IRC drew more than 200 top revolver shooters, representing 22 states and six foreign nations.
Titles were awarded in the Open, Limited or Retro divisions with scoring based on time and accuracy where time penalties are accrued for misses and shots outside the x-ring.
