SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – With students returning to classes this week, the Cal Poly Marksmanship Club at the California Polytechnic State University announced that they are kicking off the 2014-15 school year with a $10,000 grant awarded through the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative.
“Thanks to the generous support of the National Shooting Sports Foundation and its member companies, the Cal Poly Marksmanship Club is looking forward to bringing the excitement and fun of the shooting sports to the greater Cal Poly community,” said Matt Theiss, Mechanical Engineering major and industry liaison for the Cal Poly Marksmanship Club.
Situated on California’s Central Coast, Cal Poly is best known for its Engineering, Architectural and Agricultural programs, and is ranked among the best engineering schools in the Western United States according to U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of ‘America’s Best Colleges.’
Officially formed in April of 2014, the Cal Poly Marksmanship Club was established to provide students and staff with a safe, convenient venue to participate in the shooting sports. Club meetings are held on campus every other week and feature discussions on firearms related topics as well as presentations by guest speakers.
In its first full month of operation the Cal Poly Marksmanship Club quickly grew to 50 members. This year club officials are hoping, thanks to the financial support provided by the firearms industry, to expand participation to over 150 members and field teams for intercollegiate competition in a variety of shooting disciplines.
Shooting events for the Cal Poly Marksmanship Club will take place on the ranges of the nearby San Luis Obispo Sportsman Association. For more information on the Cal Poly Marksmanship Club, visit them on Facebook at facebook.com/CPMarksmanship.
